Directions: From the City of Barrie, take Highway 26 west to Edenvale. Cross the Nottawasaga River the marker is on the right.
Description: Following the American victory on the Thames in October 1813, an attack on Mackinac Island, that guardian of the watershed of the Upper Mississippi, was inevitable. In what is now known as Edenvale, a contingent of soldiers led by Lieutenant-Colonel Robert McDougall of the Glengarry Fencibles enroute from Kingston to Mackinac Island with stores, weapons and soldiers spent a winter encamped here along the Nottawasaga River. The contingent of soldiers with McDougall were the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, an infantry of foot, but also former fishermen and familiar with small boats and sailing. Here they built a flotilla of boats when in the spring breakup of May of 1814, battled the ice flows to reach the island after a three week journey to the occupying forces relief.

The location is marked with a cairn and is beside the Edenvale Conservation Area that offers travelers a convenient place to rest, picnic, launch their small boat or drop a fishing line. The area can also be used for overnight camping by people arriving by canoe only. A $5 fee per person is collected on site. The area is open spring to fall from 9am to 9pm.
